WS in 2017

Well, 2016 is coming to a close and it was a big year.  Tons and tons of books came out that did really well and grabbed a lot of peoples attention, and my book, Kingpin (An Italian Mafia Romance), was one of those big books of 2016. 13180926_1736689803241828_1586459477_n

I was so proud to see it do well and finally get me some attention that I’ve been hoping for for a long time. So I just want to say Thank You to all of my fans for making that book do as well as it did.

But now we are moving onto 2017, and I am excited just like people usually are at the end of the year when they get their New Year’s resolutions together. For me and my family, it’s going to be a big year for us anyway, because we are finally moving away from the island of Guam and officially going back to the United States!  We don’t know where in the states we’re going to live, but we do know that we are going back to the states, and that means book signings and being able to communicate on social media at a time that isn’t 2 o’clock in the morning for me and my wife!  This move is going to be great for us from a business standpoint, so now that we know that it’s official and we have no other option, I am excited about it and can’t wait to see how it positively affects what we’re doing in the book world. We have three book signings already locked in for 2017: Vegas in August, Phoenix in September, Manchester in November, which we are beyond excited about!  So we can’t wait to get out there and see our fans, and give autographs, and do meet & greets and just have a great time being published authors in this amazing indie community.

The books that I have planned to publish in 2017 are stories that I am so excited to write!  All of them are what I like to call Alpha Romantic Suspense, where it’s romantic suspense but the lead male character is an alpha bad ass who doesn’t take any shit and is ride or die for his woman like no other!  I learned a lot from the three books I published in 2016, and I plan on using everything that I learned this year to make every book that I publish next year my best books yet, starting with Madman (A Wilde King Novel).

2017 will be a big year for the #AuthorPowerCouple!  Writing and game-planning has already begun. 2017 is curtains up for me, personally. Enjoy the show!

Well, that was fast…

Book writing is a tough business.  You spend months putting in work, pouring your life into a 70K+ word novel, becoming your characters, figuring out ways to bring them to life and get people to love them as much as you do, and it consumes you.  After all the writing is done, you spend so much time trying to figure out how to promote the story and the characters, and your life becomes edits and revisions and ARC’s and you put just as much effort into that as you did the writing phase.  You buildup and buildup getting ready for the release and doing all you can to hype it up and get people talking about, and the next thing you know, IT’S OVER.  The book comes out and one of two things happens…

One: your book is popular and you can feel it picking up in sales and promo and word of mouth, and you get butterflies all in your stomach from the love you see being bestowed on your work, and you get the urge to check USA Today to see if you made one of the big bestseller’s lists because that’s what happens when your book is selling, and you feel like you’re on top of the whole damn world!  You get anxious to track your numbers and dollar figures, and you happily accept those messages from people telling you how awesome you and your story are!  It can be the best feeling in the world!  What a rush it can be!

Or Two happens: your book comes out and sells decently in its first few days on the shelf, and then you watch in sadness as the numbers slowly fade away and your Amazon ranking goes the opposite way you were hoping it would.  You go out and beg bloggers to share that your book is live because based on the sales, it’s obvious the world doesn’t know your book is available for purchase because that’s the only thing that makes sense after all the work you did trying to let people know how awesome the book actually is.  After a little while, you accept that the book is not going to sell as well as you thought it would or as well as it deserves.  You take a deep breath, try not to cry, try not to get caught up in what the fuck happened, try not to ask yourself what you could have done better to get people to know about this book, and tell yourself it’ll be better next time.  You shake your head because you know this book is better than your last, and keep telling yourself that your time is coming, and you say, WELL, THAT WAS FAST.  It’s over and time to move on to the next book already.  Sometimes your work is a hit, sometimes you feel like shit and have to pick up the pieces and move on.  It doesn’t mean your book is crap, or that you didn’t work hard enough, or pay enough for ads, or contact enough blogs.  When you’re not one of the big names or one of the cool kids in a crew, sometimes your work just doesn’t get noticed.  It doesn’t mean that you sell out and go join a clique to ride somebody else’s coattails.  Fuck that.  You don’t quit.  You move on.  You work harder.  You just keep writing.  And it’s on to the next one.

You use the experience as motivation going forward, and you get yourself hyped up to write.  You pay attention to every book that gets so much hype and you try to learn what you can and make sure your next book is one that is not to be denied.  You get fired up, and you write your ass off.  You promote your newest releases of course, but you dive into your next story with everything you’ve got.  You strategize your cover and synopsis and figure out how to get them to work to your advantage, because you are so sick and tired of being forgotten about.  You give your life’s blood to the next book, and tell yourself they won’t be able to ignore this one.  They won’t be able to ignore any of the ones you’ve got coming up, because with every book release, with every book that goes unnoticed, you learn something and use it to make you better.  You get up, you dust yourself off, you wipe away the tears, and you grow.

Nothing worth keeping ever comes easily.  We’ve got nowhere to go but up, and that’s where we’re going.

Kingpin is LIVE, and here’s how it came to be!

13118860_1404742856218050_4020178794214932701_n

It’s here!!  My beautiful baby, Kingpin is here and ready for you to fall in love with it!!  This book is my absolute favorite, hands down, out of all the books I’ve written to date.  It was a journey getting to Kingpin, and here’s how this novel came to be.

All 5 Banner  WorthSaving_ecover

When I started writing, it all began with Frozen Secrets.  This was my first book, and I knew I wanted to write suspense because all I read is suspense.  So, I came out with a bang and wrote a murder mystery with a detective named Jarrod Granger.  He was a misogynistic asshole in the beginning who grew and became much better by the end, and his story was my favorite (which is why he will be my longest running character over the course of my writing career… That’ll make sense later, trust me)  But, after Frozen Secretsthe book world shifted when a little book called Fifty Shades of Grey came out.  After Christian Gray, EVERYBODY became an erotic author in the indie world, and it was working for them, so I jumped on the bandwagon (no disrespect to the erotic authors out there!  Love you & stuff)  The next thing I knew, I’d written 4 books in a row that were “erotic” suspense or something like that.  My sales declined, and writing started to become less fun than what it was when I started with Frozen Secrets.

So, once Worth Saving released and got no love, I knew I needed to get my shit together and start having fun again.  And that’s how Kingpin was born!! Frozen Secrets was sort of romantic suspense, so I wanted to get back to that and have a blast, and Dominic Collazo was the first thing I thought of.  I needed him to be violent yet calm and collected.  That last thing I cared about was how sexy he was. I wanted him to care about no one except his love; if you deserve to be shot, he’ll shoot you and not think twice about it.  Need your legs broken?  Fuhgeddabout it!  Broken legs it is.  The only person who would matter to him would be his girl, who ended up being Alannah Sullivan.  But I knew I didn’t want to play the game where the guy hides his life from the girl, and when she finds out she loses her shit over it. I’d already walked that road.  So, I wanted Alannah to know that Dominic was a bad ass who’d kill anyone except her, and the only way to do that would be for her to have known him a very long time.  I needed her to be in the loop since the beginning, so that’s how I ended up deciding to start with PART ONE being when the two of them first met in just the fifth grade.  I knew that if I started with them being young, by the time they got to PART TWO as adults when the shit really started to hit the big fat fan, it would all make sense.

This book has everything I’ve been wanting to put in my books, and now that it’s finished and available (for only 99 cents this week, by the way), there isn’t a chance in hell that I would ever go back to writing stuff I don’t want to write.  Kingpin is me, 100%, and even if it doesn’t sell like crazy and become a bestseller, it’s my foundation for what’s to come and I can find peace in the fact that I wrote what I wanted to write.  And it’s been a long time since I felt that way.

I’ll end this by saying that there are so many reasons why you should read Kingpin, but I just wanted to give you my personal reasons now that it’s out.  This book is what I’ve been wanting to give you for nearly 3 years now.  This is 100% WS Greer, which is why reviews are already saying that this is my best book yet, and all the more reason you should go buy Kingpin (An Italian Mafia Romance).  And you can expect more suspense/romantic suspense from me, because I’m just beginning to show you who I am.  This is only the beginning for me.

One Hater Won’t Stop The Show!!

Behind every great man is a great woman… and a pack of haters throwing shade.

13101461_1731303270447148_1986545947_n

If you haven’t figured it out by now, Kingpin is my baby, and it’s only 5 days away from being released to the world!!  I started writing this book in September, and before I ever wrote one word in Microsoft, I already knew the title of the book.  It was going to be Kingpin 100% of the way, and when I told the title to my wife, I was thrilled at the smile and giggle she let out.  I knew Kingpin was the title, and I knew the story would be exactly what I needed to revive what I perceived to be a slump of books for me.  So, Kingpin was always meant to be special to me.

But, as expected, there are haters out there and this book game is about competition, believe it or not.  Not everyone out there is as friendly as you may think or as they would have you believe with their smiling profile pictures and friendly Acknowledgements sections.  So I have a small bit of shade coming from someone who I will not name, and they’re trying to sneakily throw shade on my Kingpin release.  I won’t go into specifics because, admittedly, I’m the lesser known underdog in this situation… for now.  So, I’ll just say loud and clear, ONE HATER WON’T STOP THE SHOW.

To counteract the shade being thrown at the lead up to my release day, I’m gonna have a giveaway every stinkin’ day on my Facebook page.  So, be sure to go to my page and follow the instructions that I’m gonna lay out every single day to win ebooks on said day, and to be entered into the grand prize giveaway of A SIGNED COPY OF EVERY SINGLE BOOK I’VE EVER WRITTEN.  Oh yeah!!  All 7 books, FREE, SIGNED, and SENT TO YOU!  It’s time to go all out for the sake of my baby.  I need this book to be a success, and it won’t happen without your help.  I need you, WS Greer fans.  So, head over to my Facebook page and enter a giveaway a day!!  I’m gonna break the internet with Kingpin, because ONE HATER WON’T STOP THE SHOW!!

P.S.  I really hope the person trying to slyly throw their shade on the lead up to my release sees this blog post, because you know who you are, and you know what you’re doing.  But in the end, I know I did what was right, and I was the bigger person who went out of his way to do something I didn’t have to do.  I did what I would’ve wanted someone else in the same boat to do for me if the shoe was on the other foot.  Nonetheless, I’ll persevere, MY Kingpin will persevere, and you will know… ONE. HATER. WON’T. STOP. THE. SHOW.

Until Next Time…

Homecoming, T-Minus 12, and The Walking Dead

I’m finally back at home!!  Yep, after 6 long weeks, I’m finally back home with my beautiful wife and kids and my annoying yet lovable dogs!!  42 days was a beast to have to put up with, but I endured… even walked away with a nice little award that only 6 out of 69 people received.

160415-F-QQ371-018
Not too shabby, huh??  Well, even with the accolades, I’m glad that shit is over and I’m so glad to be home again!  I missed all of this, and all it takes is 6 weeks away to make you realize how important the little things are.  I’m a lucky man.

T-minus 12 days and Kingpin will be live and in your hands!!  Whoo-fuckin;-hooo!!  That’s right, there’s only a week and a half left before Kingpin (An Italian Mafia Romance) goes live and sets the book world on fire.  Yes, I do have high hopes and expectations for this book, so let’s just hope a blogger or two gives it a chance and even decides to say something about it even though I’m not already super famous.  Fingers crossed on that one.  Anyhoo, I have plans to do some giveaways this coming weekend and of course the weekend before it releases, so please show me some love and take a shot at reading Kingpin early.  You will not regret it.  The countdown is on!!

Kingpin_BN

Lastly, now that I’m home, my wife has me all caught up on watching The Walking Dead.  I had never given this show a chance, and now that I have, I realize I’ve been missing out (Hey bloggers, see what happens when you give something a chance??).  This show is awesome, and I feel all kinds of inspired by it.  Not by the zombies or anything like that, but by the high level of shock and suspense.  The show is fantastic and I hope to write books in the future that shock the shit out of people the way it does.  So, if you’re not up on The Walking Dead, get on it!!  I’m currently at the beginning of season 5 as I write this, and it has been worth every minute spent sitting on this couch like a total lazy ass.  It’s official, I love The Walking Dead!!

the-walking-dead-season-5-trailer

What I’m currently reading…

Yes, I’m still reading Fool Me Once, by Harlan Coben.  I know it’s been nearly two weeks!!  DON”T JUDGE ME!!  I’ve been traveling, and enjoying being home, and watching The Walking Dead, and getting geared up for Kingpin to go live.  I’m swamped over here!!  I’ll get back to it, I promise.

Until Next Week, my people…

Homeward Bound!!

Kingpin_FBcover (DATED)

9:40pm here in Okinawa, Japan, and I’m still just over 2 days away from heading home, but it’s all good because the next time I write in this blog, I’ll be doing it from the comfort of my own couch… or maybe I’ll do it in my office… or maybe in my bed with a cup of Sprite and Crown Apple next to me… who effing knows?!?!  All I know is that I’m gonna be at home, in my house with my fine ass wife next to me!!!

It’s been 6 weeks, people.  6 weeks since I’ve been in the comfort of my house, and I’ll tell you, I’m so damn ready to go back.  Living out of a suitcase in a hotel for 6 weeks is not awesome.  I’m actually waiting for my laundry to dry while I write this.  This is the last load I wash before I go home!!  Whoo hooo!!

Anyway, so I’m homeward bound, y’all!!  And when I get home, I’m gonna be off from work for 17 days straight, and all of my energy will be going to getting people amped up and in the know about Kingpin going live on May 2nd.  It’s gonna be full-on promo mode up in here, and I’m gonna need all the help I can get to get the word out.  So, I’m planning on a giveaway or two or three, and I’ve got new teasers set to come out pretty often so you can get just as excited about the release as I am.  I’m planning on giving away ARCs too, so if you’re interested in an ARC of Kingpin, keep your eyes open on social media… better yet, I’ll take it a step further for my fans who follow this blog.  Leave a comment on this post about wanting an ARC of Kingpin, and I’ll hook you up with preferential treatment!  For realisies!!

I just went and got my laundry and folded it all up, now it’s 9:55pm, and it’s time to get Wednesday over and done with so I can get off this island and back to my own island of Guam on Saturday!  So, I’m gonna grab the book I’m currently reading, Fool Me Once by Harlan Coben (my favorite author), and get my ass in the bed.  Homeward Bound, baby!!

Check out the latest teaser for Kingpin (An Italian Mafia Romance), hitting shelves on May 2nd, and preorder your copy on iBooks or Barnes & Noble now!!

Q&A With Bestselling Author WS Greer!!

So, I conducted a Q&A on all my social media sites, and here are the questions I was asked.  If you know anything about me, I’m always as open and honest as possible.  So, every answer is MY answer, and I don’t need anyone to condone or agree with what I say.  This is me being me.

Q: Is Worth Saving a standalone novel or part of a series of books?

A: Worth Saving is a standalone.  I never intended for this story to be a series, but you never know what might happen.  As a writer, things pop into your head all the time, and when they do and they sound good, you roll with it.  So, it’s not in the plans right now, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be later on.

Q: Do you see yourself continuing with your characters from Frozen Secrets?

A: Abso-fucking-lutely!!  Out of all the books I’ve written so far, Frozen Secrets is still my favorite.  Even though in hindsight, I think I made Jarrod a little too misogynistic and shallow, once he grew out of that and got his act together, I loved him.  I have a soft spot for Stacey because she’s based on my wife!  So, there are already plans in the future to write another Detective Granger novel, possibly in 2016, there’s just other plans I have to get to first.  But, I promise those characters are not done!

Q: What can we expect after Worth Saving?

A: BIG SHIT!!  I don’t want to go into detail about what’s next for me, but I can say a little.  #1. I already have a title for my next book.  #2. I’ve already starting writing my next book.  #3. I’m already searching for a cover for my next book.  #4. This next book is me writing for all the reasons I love literature.  It’s me doing 100% of what I want to do, and nothing less.  #5. Even my wife knows this is the best book I’ve ever come up with, and I’m only (at the time of this blog post) 5K words into it.  #6. This next book will define me as an author, and set the path for every book I write after it.  #7. This book will replace Frozen Secrets as my favorite I’ve written.  And lastly, #8. I don’t give a fuck about writing what I believe will sell anymore.  I’m done with that shit, and my next book will be the first of many examples of me writing what I love.

Q: Are you going to continue writing more contemporary romance?

A:  No. Worth Saving is my first and last contemporary romance.  Not because I didn’t enjoy writing the story, but because writing contemporary romance just isn’t what I do.  Up to this point, I’ve think I’ve written every genre I’d be willing to consider, and now that contemporary romance has been checked off the list of things I’d like to write, I know my heart is somewhere else.  My heart belongs to suspense, plain and simple.  I’ve been saying that for too long without going through with what I believe in, and anybody who knows me well knows I always stand up for what I believe in, no matter how unpopular it may be.  This is no different.  I love suspense, it’s what I’m best at writing, and it’s what I’m gonna do.  So, although I loved writing Worth Saving, I won’t be writing contemporary romance again.

Q: What made you come up with Austin and Layla’s story?

A:  Well, the truth is that I was actually writing another story when I decided to try to write a contemporary romance.  I was writing a book called Unsound (which still is not my next book), I was about 14K words into it, and then Austin and Layla from Worth Saving just took over.  I was excited about the idea of writing a popular genre that I thought would sell better than the psychological thriller/suspense I was writing at the time.  So, I put Unsound down and picked up Worth Saving.  When the idea of writing a romance popped into my head, Austin and Layla’s story came right along with it.  It was a package deal, I guess.

Q: Will we ever get anymore Kelvin Carter Jr.?

A: I get this question a lot.  Claiming Carter has sold more copies than any of my other books, by far.  People loved Kelvin, and they seem to love the Carter Trilogy, which is awesome.  However, the Carters are done for sure.  Although Claiming Carter sold quite a bit, I wrote that story for all the wrong reasons.  As I’ve said in past Q&A’a and interviews, Kelvin was supposed to be my version of Christian Grey, and I wrote erotica because it was the hot genre at the time.  Well, fuck all that.  I’ll never do that again.  I had to force myself to finish writing the Carter trilogy, and I won’t put myself through that ever again.  I love Kelvin and how he developed in the end, but what’s coming next will be blow all of that away.  I’m in the zone with this new shit.

Q: Are you going to write the typical bad boy heroes, or more realistic antiheroes in the future?

A:  Uh-oh, controversy is looming.  Here’s my answer… fuck this typical bad boy stuff that’s going on right now.  I refuse to be like everybody else just because it’s convenient.  My heroes are going to be real.  They’re gonna have real issues with backgrounds and stories and feelings that people can relate to.  NEWS FLASH!!  If you look around the world, most men are not bad boys.  Nor are they alpha males.  Those characteristics are rare.  My heroes may end up being bad boys by accident, but I’m not writing it that way on purpose.  Here’s an example: you ever heard of Javier?  He’s a character written by one of my favorite authors, Karina Halle.  That’s the kind of antihero I like.  Javier is a bad ass, but not because he’s trying to be.  That’s just who he is.  So, wait until you see who I have coming up next year.  He’s a bad ass, but not because he’s trying to be.  That’s just who he is, and you’ll get to see how he becomes the bad ass that he is.  My characters and I are different… on purpose.

Q: Would you ever co-write a book with your wife?

A:  Absolutely.  We haven’t come up with a story yet, but I can totally see us doing it in the future.  We’ve got individual goals we’d like to accomplish first, but once we get to where we want to go as individuals, we’ll make it happen.

Q: Do you prefer writing series’ or standalones?

A:  I’m not sure I mind either one, if the story is right.  Up to this point, I’ve written one trilogy and three standalones.  The trilogy I wrote was difficult to complete, but I have reasons for why that is.  My next book just might be a series… I guess you’ll just have to wait and see.

Q: Where do you see yourself in five years?

A:  Somewhere in America (I really hate living in Guam), and a consistent New York Times Bestseller of romantic suspense.  “I’m tired of seeing who you’re checking for now.  Just give it time, we’ll see who’s still around a decade from now.  That’s real.”  -DRAKE-

Q: What do you wish there was more of in the indie world?

A:  Tough question, but the answer might get me in trouble.  I wish there was more sincerity in the indie world.  All the male authors acting like they’re living the lives of their characters drives me crazy.  Everybody writing the same damn book over and over again drives me crazy.  Every book being an alpha millionaire/billionaire so & so drives me crazy.  Where the hell did the creativity go?  Where’s the diversity?  Why do I keep seeing the same book with different titles?  Why do covers with half-naked men on them get all the attention?  When did depth, and substance, and creativity become bad things?  The horny-ness (is that a word?) of the readers is making it to where good books are being overlooked.  If you’re indie, and you’re not writing erotica then you’re automatically being ignored, and I really hate that.  Not everybody is talented enough to be an author, but it seems like anybody can be an author now, so long as you have a shirtless guy on the cover, and a sex scene for a teaser.

Worth Saving hits shelves October 17th!!
