Inside The Mind of a Madman – Q&A

There’s nothing like an inside scoop.  Being able to go behind the scenes and get answers that nobody else has is always cool, which is why I’ve always loved interviews and Q&As.  Maybe I’m a bit narcissistic (I’ve been accused of as much, lol), but I like being asked questions about my work.  It’s honestly because I love what I do, so naturally, I love being able to talk about it. It’s not narcissism, it’s passion.  Don’t confuse the two.  Writing is what I do, it’s my passion in life outside of loving my family, so talking about it gets me fired up.  It gets me excited, and I honestly could answer questions about it all day every day (if you have questions about writing, or publishing, or anything writing related, ask me!  I love this stuff!)  So, below you’ll find a few questions I’ve received since I started the beta/ARC process for Madman (Love & Chaos #1), and I’m expanding on the answers specifically for this blog post.  Solomon and his intense, psychotic personality have been the most frequent topic, so I decided to give my readers & book fans some insight on Solomon King.  Step inside the mind of a madman

Q:   Wow!  I just finished Madman, and Solomon is my favorite thing in the world right now!  You did a great job with him.  What on earth made you come up with a character like him?

A:  Lol!  Well, thank you!  He’s by far my favorite character of all time, hands down.  Solomon is actually the culmination of a few ideas.  First off, I’ve been craving a character like him since I started writing.  I’ve always thought that James Patterson was dope, and the way he created so many stories for Alex Cross was always awesome to me.  I’ve been wanting a character that I loved more than all the others for a while, but every other character I made just didn’t check all the boxes of the type of guy who I’d never get tired of writing.  Solomon checks off all the boxes.

Secondly, I originally got the personality for Solomon from a movie.  We took the family to go see Suicide Squad, and seeing Jared Leto’s version of the Joker really got me thinking.  I wanted to create a complete psycho who was wild and unpredictable just like the Joker.  I wanted a completely insane, psychopath, who isn’t interested in redeeming himself in the eyes of the reader.  He’s too crazy to care about whether the reader will like his actions or not.  He will set your house on fire with you in it, then laugh as he watches it burn, all while still being completely in love with his woman!  How dope is that?!  I didn’t want the violent side of Joker & Harley’s relationship, but I wanted their passionate, insane love, and that’s how Solomon King and Madman were born.

Q: I don’t know how you did it, but you somehow managed to push the limits of how far a character could go without making me think it was too far.  Were you ever worried that readers would think Solomon goes too far?

A:  Definitely not.  I took a break from writing before I was able to really dive into Madman, and during that break I fell into a new mindset about writing.  I realized that my passion for writing could only be properly fueled by the freedom to write what I want, how I want.  I can’t love it if I can’t express myself through it freely.  So, when I started getting into writing Madman, I decided that it was going to be no holds barred.  Solomon is a psycho, so there’s no such thing as going too far to him.  he doesn’t put limits on himself at all, and to him, he’s unstoppable.  He does what he wants, and dares someone to challenge him on it.  The only redeeming quality he really has is that he’s in love with Reina.  That’s all I wanted him to have.  His other character traits are perfect to me.  He’s a madman, through & through.

Q: This book really has a Joker/Harley type feel to it.  Is that on purpose?

A: Yep.  What’s more entertaining and fun to write than two psychos who are in love?!  The series title, Love & Chaos, couldn’t have been more perfect.  That’s what Reina and Solomon are, they are love & chaos personified.

Q:  Was it difficult writing Solomon’s eccentric, erratic, violent, yet genius personality?  He’s crazy and smart at the same time.

A: Nah, I wouldn’t say it was difficult.  it was more fun than anything else.  I tend to write in the male POV because I like becoming my characters.  I didn’t get to become an actor in life, so I kind of live out that dream by becoming these book characters and seeing how deep I go.  So, it was a blast being able to become Solomon and say craziness that I knew I would never say myself.  After he’d say or do something crazy, I’d read it back and laugh to myself, thinking, “Holy shit this guy is nuts, and I love it!”

Q: How many books do you have planned for the Love & Chaos Series?

A:  I don’t know, but I feel like these characters could go on for a long time.  I love them so much, I couldn’t bear to see them go anytime soon.  The possibilities for these two are endless, and I already have 3 more story lines for them, and all 3 of them absolutely have to become novels, plus I’m already writing a novella between books 1 & 2.  I may take a break from them and write another story in 2019, but I’ll come back to them after that.  I fell in love with Solomon & Reina.  They made me love writing in a way I hadn’t yet discovered.  I owe it to them to keep them alive and use them as a way to re-ignite my fire if ever it starts to get tired and burn out.

You Want An Author You Can Trust To ALWAYS Deliver. And You’ve Found Him.

You know, I think we’re all looking for something that’s dependable in this book world of ours.  It’s hard to find, honestly.  I’ve liked certain authors only for them to drop a book that I think is terrible and never be able to return to their former glory in my eyes.  As authors, we try so hard to please our readers.  We go out of our way to write what we think our readers will love instead of just writing what WE love.  Sounds simple, but when you’re an author, being 100% true to yourself can be a real challenge.  That’s why I’m glad I had 2017 to put things into perspective for me.

2017: The Year of Nothing & Everything

For the first time since I started writing in 2013, a year went by without me publishing a book.  As you know, I went through some personal hell and had to fight my way through it (I’m still not even all the way through it yet!).  But in that struggle, I got to sit back and watch the book world revolve, and I got to think about myself as an author.  I got to review everything I’d ever written, evaluate it, pick it all apart, laugh at myself, get pissed at myself, and promise to come back as a brand new author for readers.  By doing nothing, I learned everything.  By the time I started writing Madman (again), I felt like I was doing it for the first time.  I was 100% locked in as I brought Solomon King to life and let go of every inhibition I had before him.  Now that Madman is done, I can never go back to whatever the hell I was feeling and doing before Solomon King forced his way into my life.  Ever.  Thanks to him, I’m ready to do what I love, exactly how I want to do it.

I’m committed to writing in a way I was never even close to before Solomon.  I feel like me and writing were just dating before, but we got married over my break in 2017, and now it has made me a brand new man.  Writing is everything to me, and that includes more than just novels.  It means novels, novellas, short stories, poems, and whatever the hell else I want to write.  This blog will expand to become all the things I have in my head that I want to get out through writing.  Some things will be saved for publishing, others will be things exclusive to this blog.  Because…

This Is What I Do

Before my surgery, I was big into lifting weights.  I actually was an amateur bodybuilder from 2006 to late 2016 when my back flipped the script on me.  I was dedicated to that long before I ever thought to write Frozen Secrets.  When my back changed the game on me, it set me free.  My love for lifting weights and standing on a stage rocking nothing but a Speedo was suppressed because I knew my body couldn’t handle it anymore.  Having to give that up left an opening in me, and it wasn’t until my spinal surgery and the recovery thereafter that I figured out how to fill the void bodybuilding left.  I’ve filled it now with writing.  I’ve loved it since I was in the 5th grade, when I was writing poems for girls and songs for my friends.  I’ve been good at this since I was 11 years old, and for the first time in my life, I’m dedicated to it–to perfecting it!  This is what I do.  I write dope ass books, and from now on, they are gonna sell their asses off, because the stories I have in me are infinite and absolute FIRE!

I found some stuff online about an author named Octavia Butler.  She was a bestselling science fiction writer who had a notebook (or a few notebooks) that she wrote in all the time.  When I saw a screenshot of one of the pages from this notebook, I lost my mind!  The woman had literally written down exactly what she was going to become as an author, and why.  She brought her dreams to life through her love for the written word and hard work.  So, I’ll wrap this blog post up with the screenshot of her notebook that helped to flip a brand new switch within me.  I am a writer.  This is what I do.  You can count on me to do it and be dope as fuck at it.  And my success hasn’t even begun yet.  2018 is the beginning of my ascent.  See To It!!

Long Live the King is Live–And Here I/We Come!

First things first… My newest baby, Long Live the King (An Italian Mafia Romance Duet #2) is LIVE!!!!  The moment has finally arrived, and my book is on shelves everywhere on the I-net, waiting for you to download it and indulge!  This book was such a long time coming, and I’m so proud to see it completed and out there for the world to read.  It took a lot out of me, finishing this book, and that’s why I appreciate and love it so much!!

live

There isn’t anything that I can say about this book that I haven’t already said, so I’ll just post this here and hope that after months of promotion and trying to hype this up, you’ll believe me when I tell you that this book is the best thing I have ever written, and it will blow you away.  The rest is up to you.  This is an epic conclusion, and I hope you’ll take a chance on it for 99¢.

Now, on to the next part of this blog post–Here I/We Come!!

I’ve been doing this for three years now, and it has been an incredible journey, and I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish in this short time with the 8 books I have on the shelf.  However, it’s time for more.  I’m ambitious, and I want to be great.  It’s really as simple as that.  I want more and more people to read my books and fall in love with these stories that I fall in love with when I think of them.  I want the world to love my characters just as much as I do.  So, here I/We come.

My wife, bestselling author Isabel Lucero, and I, have been being pretty quiet about ourselves since we started this.  We’ve sat back and watched as other books and other authors have blown up and gone on to be big deals.  We’ve watched other male authors come and go and form clicks to join forces and fans, and we’ve been in the shadows, biding our time, waiting for it to be our turn.  Well, waiting for it to be our turn has only gotten us so far, and it’s obvious that it won’t take us to where we want to go.  So, we’re about to be everywhere.  We’re about to be in you faces nonstop!  I’m totally not kidding.  Before this post, I’ve already done 3 live stream videos where I have given away books to anybody who PM’s me, and I’ve got another book group takeover first thing tomorrow morning.  We’re going to plaster our mugs all over the internet so that people can get to know us and tell other people about us.  We are a married couple who writes books!  Both of us are bestselling authors!  We have what nobody else does, and we haven’t shown ourselves to the world.  Well this is it.  Those days are OVER.  So, I plan on being everywhere all the damn time.  It’s gonna be me and my baby, forming our own little click, and taking over the world.  We are the new Joker and Harley Quinn.  The world is ours, and we want you to know who we are.  So, if after all this time, you still feel like you don’t know who I am or who she is, and you’re not sure about buying our books for whatever reason, you’re about to get to know us.

I’m the Joker, she’s my Harley Quinn, and we’re about to take over the world.  Ready or not.  Here we come!!

The Gate is Wide Open – Following Kingpin

When I was writing Kingpin (An Italian Mafia Romance Duet #1), I knew it was going to change everything.  I could feel it when I was typing the words, when the phrases flowed out like water after the dam breaks.  I knew it when I felt more motivated and excited to promote and advertise for Kingpin, and I felt it in my gut when people kept saying they were just as hyped up about the release as I was.  Then, on May 2nd, it happened.  The change I had been waiting for finally came.  Kingpin quickly became my bestselling book to date, an international bestseller, and I was suddenly a somebody on the cusp of becoming a bigger somebody in this game.  The reviews poured in and people started talking about me, wondering if I was a man or a woman and all kinds of other shit.  Just like that, everything changed.  WS Greer came to life.

Now, here we are, a month and a half after Kingpin’s release, and it feels like everything I did before May 2nd was just a dream.  I don’t think about any of this stuff the same way now.  It’s like I got a big, fat, boost of confidence in myself, and the freakin’ flood gates are wide open.  I’m currently in the middle of writing Long Live the King (An Italian Mafia Romance Duet #2), and I feel like a man possessed (yes, I am a man).  I feel more motivated than ever to do this my way, because I know that doing it my way is the only way that makes sense for me.  It might not work for anybody else, but it only has to work for me.  When I write for LLtK (Long Live the King), it’s like I go into a different zone.  I’m like a damn genius with words, metaphors, and similes.  I edit like nobody’s business, and my imagination is live and vivid like I’m watching it in my living room on my 65″ LED TV.  I hate that I wasted so much time trying to be something I’m not, but now that I’m doing this my way and for myself, it’s on like never before.  I’m a mission.  I’m gonna be the hottest male author in the indie game, and what’s more, I’m gonna do it without selling myself out and writing “what’s hot.”  I’m gonna do it by writing exactly what I want, and it’s gonna blow your minds, because when I’m doing it for me, I’m actually really good at this shit (forgive me for the brief moment of tooting my own horn)  Mark my words.  Kingpin was just the beginning.

So before I go, here’s my promise to you.  If you loved Kingpin, that’s awesome, and I thank you for taking a chance with me and eagerly awaiting what I have coming next to see if I can sustain this momentum—to see if I’m really as good as Kingpin made it look like I am.  Well, I promise you, I’m that good (horn tooting again, sorry), and Long Live the King is going to BLOW YOU AWAY.  You’ve never read a mafia romance like this.  And I can’t wait to read your reviews and messages when you finish it and have the most insane book hangover you’ve ever experienced.  The flood gates are wide open, and I’m gonna live up to the tagline in my new logo.  Just you wait and see.

Homeward Bound!!

Kingpin_FBcover (DATED)

9:40pm here in Okinawa, Japan, and I’m still just over 2 days away from heading home, but it’s all good because the next time I write in this blog, I’ll be doing it from the comfort of my own couch… or maybe I’ll do it in my office… or maybe in my bed with a cup of Sprite and Crown Apple next to me… who effing knows?!?!  All I know is that I’m gonna be at home, in my house with my fine ass wife next to me!!!

It’s been 6 weeks, people.  6 weeks since I’ve been in the comfort of my house, and I’ll tell you, I’m so damn ready to go back.  Living out of a suitcase in a hotel for 6 weeks is not awesome.  I’m actually waiting for my laundry to dry while I write this.  This is the last load I wash before I go home!!  Whoo hooo!!

Anyway, so I’m homeward bound, y’all!!  And when I get home, I’m gonna be off from work for 17 days straight, and all of my energy will be going to getting people amped up and in the know about Kingpin going live on May 2nd.  It’s gonna be full-on promo mode up in here, and I’m gonna need all the help I can get to get the word out.  So, I’m planning on a giveaway or two or three, and I’ve got new teasers set to come out pretty often so you can get just as excited about the release as I am.  I’m planning on giving away ARCs too, so if you’re interested in an ARC of Kingpin, keep your eyes open on social media… better yet, I’ll take it a step further for my fans who follow this blog.  Leave a comment on this post about wanting an ARC of Kingpin, and I’ll hook you up with preferential treatment!  For realisies!!

I just went and got my laundry and folded it all up, now it’s 9:55pm, and it’s time to get Wednesday over and done with so I can get off this island and back to my own island of Guam on Saturday!  So, I’m gonna grab the book I’m currently reading, Fool Me Once by Harlan Coben (my favorite author), and get my ass in the bed.  Homeward Bound, baby!!

Check out the latest teaser for Kingpin (An Italian Mafia Romance), hitting shelves on May 2nd, and preorder your copy on iBooks or Barnes & Noble now!!

Allow Me To Re-Reintroduce Myself…

Well, it’s been a minute.  I haven’t dropped anything on my beloved blog in so long, I forgot I had it.  Well, the day of pulling my head out of my ass has arrived.  I’ve waited a while to do this, and even now the timing is a bit off because I’m not at home with my family, but I have a book due to hit shelves in less than a month, so there’s no more time to eff around.

So, here it is.  I’ve been down this road before.  I tend to hold things in until they build and explode, then I go off on some long rant about whatever, filled with points and alternate points, just in case someone has a counterpoint.  I get long-winded and emotional and usually regret going there.  I’m being smarter about it this time.  This time, I’m going to present you with my dilemma, and then I’m going to tell you what’s actually important.  Let’s begin.  Allow me to re-reintroduce myself…

My name is WS Greer.  I’m a bestselling author of suspense/romance (or just romantic suspense, if that’s what you call it), and I serve as an active duty member of the USAF.  I’m currently living in Guam with my family until the middle of 2017 when I’ll move back to the states and start giving 100% to books and building #TheWSBrand.  Because of my career in the Air Force, writing books is hard as f**k.  I have almost no time to get it done, but I love it, and I’m proud of it, so I make time for it.  At this exact moment, on April 6 2016, I’m sitting in a sh**ty chair in a hotel in Okinawa, Japan.  I’ve been here since March 7th, my back hurts like fu**, and I’m still over a week away from seeing my family again.  It fu**ing sucks.  Plus, while I’m over here attending a kind of leadership school for the Air Force, I have a book that’s due to drop on May 2nd.

12696159_10208537029934055_1812844133_n

Awesome fu**ing cover, isn’t it?  I know!  My cover designer, Robin, doesn’t fu*k around.  Anyway, so I’m stuck over here in Okinawa, busy with all this school crap, and I have a book ready to hit shelves in less than a month.  Ugh.  I have no idea how I’m gonna sell this thing. That’s my dilemma.  What the fu*k do I do to get people to buy this book, when I can’t even stay up late enough to post at a time that people in America will see it?  I don’t have an answer to that.  The time difference is killing it, I’m telling you.  So, that’s the problem, and I don’t really have a solution, so here’s what I’m gonna do (this is the important part)…

I’m gonna tell you to get used to me.  I’ve been doing this book thing since 2013, when Frozen Secrets dropped and changed my life.  I’ve got 6 books on the shelf (until May 2nd, when Kingpin takes over the whole world!), and I’ve been on a bestseller’s list 4 times.  Through all that, I’ve done my absolute best to be humble and sort of quiet.  I’ve always told myself: don’t be too brash or offensive, don’t risk scaring away the fans, write what you think will sell, don’t come off as cocky… and a bunch of other sh*t I’ve seen many authors doing on a very regular basis.  Well, it’s over, ladies and gentlemen.  I don’t fu*king care anymore.  So, get used to seeing me, and I’m gonna say the sh*t I feel like saying, because if others can be themselves and sell a ton of books, why can’t I?  So fu*k it.  Wanna know the first thing I’ve been dying to say?

Kingpin (An Italian Mafia Romance) is the by far the best fu*king book I’ve ever written. I mean, it’s not even close.  To me, this is what Claiming Carter should’ve been, which is kind of funny because Claiming Carter is my best selling book to date.  Kingpin is my baby, and you wanna know why it’s so good?  Here’s the answer… because I didn’t write it for you!  I wrote it for me!  I wrote what the eff I wanted to write, and developed my characters the way I wanted to, and I didn’t care if I did something that I thought you might not like.  In fact, I didn’t think about you at all, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.  I can’t please all the different kinds of book fans out there, so I’m not gonna try.  The early reviews for Kingpin have been beyond anything I expected, and it has not skipped a beat!  So, I’ve gotta do whatever I can to get this thing in people’s hands.

Here’s my pitch…

Even if you’re not a fan of WS Greer, you need to get Kingpin.  Because by the time you finish this book, I guarantee you’ll be a fan.  That’s right!  GUARANTEE!!  Big words, huh?!!?  That’s how confident I am in this story and these characters.

I’ve done it again… ranting like a fu*king crazy person.  Sorry, I do that.

Okay, I’m gonna wrap it up now.  But, like I said, GET USED TO ME.  All the fu*ks are out the window, people, and I’m just doing me now.  The WS brand is what I’m all about.  I’m giving you me from here on out.  Take it or leave it… well, don’t LEAVE IT with this book because I poured my heart into this baby and it’s worth it.  Buy Kingpin on May 2nd!!  I GUARANTEE you won’t regret it!!

Until next week…
