Inside The Mind of a Madman – Q&A

There’s nothing like an inside scoop.  Being able to go behind the scenes and get answers that nobody else has is always cool, which is why I’ve always loved interviews and Q&As.  Maybe I’m a bit narcissistic (I’ve been accused of as much, lol), but I like being asked questions about my work.  It’s honestly because I love what I do, so naturally, I love being able to talk about it. It’s not narcissism, it’s passion.  Don’t confuse the two.  Writing is what I do, it’s my passion in life outside of loving my family, so talking about it gets me fired up.  It gets me excited, and I honestly could answer questions about it all day every day (if you have questions about writing, or publishing, or anything writing related, ask me!  I love this stuff!)  So, below you’ll find a few questions I’ve received since I started the beta/ARC process for Madman (Love & Chaos #1), and I’m expanding on the answers specifically for this blog post.  Solomon and his intense, psychotic personality have been the most frequent topic, so I decided to give my readers & book fans some insight on Solomon King.  Step inside the mind of a madman

Q:   Wow!  I just finished Madman, and Solomon is my favorite thing in the world right now!  You did a great job with him.  What on earth made you come up with a character like him?

A:  Lol!  Well, thank you!  He’s by far my favorite character of all time, hands down.  Solomon is actually the culmination of a few ideas.  First off, I’ve been craving a character like him since I started writing.  I’ve always thought that James Patterson was dope, and the way he created so many stories for Alex Cross was always awesome to me.  I’ve been wanting a character that I loved more than all the others for a while, but every other character I made just didn’t check all the boxes of the type of guy who I’d never get tired of writing.  Solomon checks off all the boxes.

Secondly, I originally got the personality for Solomon from a movie.  We took the family to go see Suicide Squad, and seeing Jared Leto’s version of the Joker really got me thinking.  I wanted to create a complete psycho who was wild and unpredictable just like the Joker.  I wanted a completely insane, psychopath, who isn’t interested in redeeming himself in the eyes of the reader.  He’s too crazy to care about whether the reader will like his actions or not.  He will set your house on fire with you in it, then laugh as he watches it burn, all while still being completely in love with his woman!  How dope is that?!  I didn’t want the violent side of Joker & Harley’s relationship, but I wanted their passionate, insane love, and that’s how Solomon King and Madman were born.

Q: I don’t know how you did it, but you somehow managed to push the limits of how far a character could go without making me think it was too far.  Were you ever worried that readers would think Solomon goes too far?

A:  Definitely not.  I took a break from writing before I was able to really dive into Madman, and during that break I fell into a new mindset about writing.  I realized that my passion for writing could only be properly fueled by the freedom to write what I want, how I want.  I can’t love it if I can’t express myself through it freely.  So, when I started getting into writing Madman, I decided that it was going to be no holds barred.  Solomon is a psycho, so there’s no such thing as going too far to him.  he doesn’t put limits on himself at all, and to him, he’s unstoppable.  He does what he wants, and dares someone to challenge him on it.  The only redeeming quality he really has is that he’s in love with Reina.  That’s all I wanted him to have.  His other character traits are perfect to me.  He’s a madman, through & through.

Q: This book really has a Joker/Harley type feel to it.  Is that on purpose?

A: Yep.  What’s more entertaining and fun to write than two psychos who are in love?!  The series title, Love & Chaos, couldn’t have been more perfect.  That’s what Reina and Solomon are, they are love & chaos personified.

Q:  Was it difficult writing Solomon’s eccentric, erratic, violent, yet genius personality?  He’s crazy and smart at the same time.

A: Nah, I wouldn’t say it was difficult.  it was more fun than anything else.  I tend to write in the male POV because I like becoming my characters.  I didn’t get to become an actor in life, so I kind of live out that dream by becoming these book characters and seeing how deep I go.  So, it was a blast being able to become Solomon and say craziness that I knew I would never say myself.  After he’d say or do something crazy, I’d read it back and laugh to myself, thinking, “Holy shit this guy is nuts, and I love it!”

Q: How many books do you have planned for the Love & Chaos Series?

A:  I don’t know, but I feel like these characters could go on for a long time.  I love them so much, I couldn’t bear to see them go anytime soon.  The possibilities for these two are endless, and I already have 3 more story lines for them, and all 3 of them absolutely have to become novels, plus I’m already writing a novella between books 1 & 2.  I may take a break from them and write another story in 2019, but I’ll come back to them after that.  I fell in love with Solomon & Reina.  They made me love writing in a way I hadn’t yet discovered.  I owe it to them to keep them alive and use them as a way to re-ignite my fire if ever it starts to get tired and burn out.

You Want An Author You Can Trust To ALWAYS Deliver. And You’ve Found Him.

You know, I think we’re all looking for something that’s dependable in this book world of ours.  It’s hard to find, honestly.  I’ve liked certain authors only for them to drop a book that I think is terrible and never be able to return to their former glory in my eyes.  As authors, we try so hard to please our readers.  We go out of our way to write what we think our readers will love instead of just writing what WE love.  Sounds simple, but when you’re an author, being 100% true to yourself can be a real challenge.  That’s why I’m glad I had 2017 to put things into perspective for me.

2017: The Year of Nothing & Everything

For the first time since I started writing in 2013, a year went by without me publishing a book.  As you know, I went through some personal hell and had to fight my way through it (I’m still not even all the way through it yet!).  But in that struggle, I got to sit back and watch the book world revolve, and I got to think about myself as an author.  I got to review everything I’d ever written, evaluate it, pick it all apart, laugh at myself, get pissed at myself, and promise to come back as a brand new author for readers.  By doing nothing, I learned everything.  By the time I started writing Madman (again), I felt like I was doing it for the first time.  I was 100% locked in as I brought Solomon King to life and let go of every inhibition I had before him.  Now that Madman is done, I can never go back to whatever the hell I was feeling and doing before Solomon King forced his way into my life.  Ever.  Thanks to him, I’m ready to do what I love, exactly how I want to do it.

I’m committed to writing in a way I was never even close to before Solomon.  I feel like me and writing were just dating before, but we got married over my break in 2017, and now it has made me a brand new man.  Writing is everything to me, and that includes more than just novels.  It means novels, novellas, short stories, poems, and whatever the hell else I want to write.  This blog will expand to become all the things I have in my head that I want to get out through writing.  Some things will be saved for publishing, others will be things exclusive to this blog.  Because…

This Is What I Do

Before my surgery, I was big into lifting weights.  I actually was an amateur bodybuilder from 2006 to late 2016 when my back flipped the script on me.  I was dedicated to that long before I ever thought to write Frozen Secrets.  When my back changed the game on me, it set me free.  My love for lifting weights and standing on a stage rocking nothing but a Speedo was suppressed because I knew my body couldn’t handle it anymore.  Having to give that up left an opening in me, and it wasn’t until my spinal surgery and the recovery thereafter that I figured out how to fill the void bodybuilding left.  I’ve filled it now with writing.  I’ve loved it since I was in the 5th grade, when I was writing poems for girls and songs for my friends.  I’ve been good at this since I was 11 years old, and for the first time in my life, I’m dedicated to it–to perfecting it!  This is what I do.  I write dope ass books, and from now on, they are gonna sell their asses off, because the stories I have in me are infinite and absolute FIRE!

I found some stuff online about an author named Octavia Butler.  She was a bestselling science fiction writer who had a notebook (or a few notebooks) that she wrote in all the time.  When I saw a screenshot of one of the pages from this notebook, I lost my mind!  The woman had literally written down exactly what she was going to become as an author, and why.  She brought her dreams to life through her love for the written word and hard work.  So, I’ll wrap this blog post up with the screenshot of her notebook that helped to flip a brand new switch within me.  I am a writer.  This is what I do.  You can count on me to do it and be dope as fuck at it.  And my success hasn’t even begun yet.  2018 is the beginning of my ascent.  See To It!!

WS in 2017

Well, 2016 is coming to a close and it was a big year.  Tons and tons of books came out that did really well and grabbed a lot of peoples attention, and my book, Kingpin (An Italian Mafia Romance), was one of those big books of 2016. 13180926_1736689803241828_1586459477_n

I was so proud to see it do well and finally get me some attention that I’ve been hoping for for a long time. So I just want to say Thank You to all of my fans for making that book do as well as it did.

But now we are moving onto 2017, and I am excited just like people usually are at the end of the year when they get their New Year’s resolutions together. For me and my family, it’s going to be a big year for us anyway, because we are finally moving away from the island of Guam and officially going back to the United States!  We don’t know where in the states we’re going to live, but we do know that we are going back to the states, and that means book signings and being able to communicate on social media at a time that isn’t 2 o’clock in the morning for me and my wife!  This move is going to be great for us from a business standpoint, so now that we know that it’s official and we have no other option, I am excited about it and can’t wait to see how it positively affects what we’re doing in the book world. We have three book signings already locked in for 2017: Vegas in August, Phoenix in September, Manchester in November, which we are beyond excited about!  So we can’t wait to get out there and see our fans, and give autographs, and do meet & greets and just have a great time being published authors in this amazing indie community.

The books that I have planned to publish in 2017 are stories that I am so excited to write!  All of them are what I like to call Alpha Romantic Suspense, where it’s romantic suspense but the lead male character is an alpha bad ass who doesn’t take any shit and is ride or die for his woman like no other!  I learned a lot from the three books I published in 2016, and I plan on using everything that I learned this year to make every book that I publish next year my best books yet, starting with Madman (A Wilde King Novel).

2017 will be a big year for the #AuthorPowerCouple!  Writing and game-planning has already begun. 2017 is curtains up for me, personally. Enjoy the show!

Well, that was fast…

Book writing is a tough business.  You spend months putting in work, pouring your life into a 70K+ word novel, becoming your characters, figuring out ways to bring them to life and get people to love them as much as you do, and it consumes you.  After all the writing is done, you spend so much time trying to figure out how to promote the story and the characters, and your life becomes edits and revisions and ARC’s and you put just as much effort into that as you did the writing phase.  You buildup and buildup getting ready for the release and doing all you can to hype it up and get people talking about, and the next thing you know, IT’S OVER.  The book comes out and one of two things happens…

One: your book is popular and you can feel it picking up in sales and promo and word of mouth, and you get butterflies all in your stomach from the love you see being bestowed on your work, and you get the urge to check USA Today to see if you made one of the big bestseller’s lists because that’s what happens when your book is selling, and you feel like you’re on top of the whole damn world!  You get anxious to track your numbers and dollar figures, and you happily accept those messages from people telling you how awesome you and your story are!  It can be the best feeling in the world!  What a rush it can be!

Or Two happens: your book comes out and sells decently in its first few days on the shelf, and then you watch in sadness as the numbers slowly fade away and your Amazon ranking goes the opposite way you were hoping it would.  You go out and beg bloggers to share that your book is live because based on the sales, it’s obvious the world doesn’t know your book is available for purchase because that’s the only thing that makes sense after all the work you did trying to let people know how awesome the book actually is.  After a little while, you accept that the book is not going to sell as well as you thought it would or as well as it deserves.  You take a deep breath, try not to cry, try not to get caught up in what the fuck happened, try not to ask yourself what you could have done better to get people to know about this book, and tell yourself it’ll be better next time.  You shake your head because you know this book is better than your last, and keep telling yourself that your time is coming, and you say, WELL, THAT WAS FAST.  It’s over and time to move on to the next book already.  Sometimes your work is a hit, sometimes you feel like shit and have to pick up the pieces and move on.  It doesn’t mean your book is crap, or that you didn’t work hard enough, or pay enough for ads, or contact enough blogs.  When you’re not one of the big names or one of the cool kids in a crew, sometimes your work just doesn’t get noticed.  It doesn’t mean that you sell out and go join a clique to ride somebody else’s coattails.  Fuck that.  You don’t quit.  You move on.  You work harder.  You just keep writing.  And it’s on to the next one.

You use the experience as motivation going forward, and you get yourself hyped up to write.  You pay attention to every book that gets so much hype and you try to learn what you can and make sure your next book is one that is not to be denied.  You get fired up, and you write your ass off.  You promote your newest releases of course, but you dive into your next story with everything you’ve got.  You strategize your cover and synopsis and figure out how to get them to work to your advantage, because you are so sick and tired of being forgotten about.  You give your life’s blood to the next book, and tell yourself they won’t be able to ignore this one.  They won’t be able to ignore any of the ones you’ve got coming up, because with every book release, with every book that goes unnoticed, you learn something and use it to make you better.  You get up, you dust yourself off, you wipe away the tears, and you grow.

Nothing worth keeping ever comes easily.  We’ve got nowhere to go but up, and that’s where we’re going.

Long Live the King is Live–And Here I/We Come!

First things first… My newest baby, Long Live the King (An Italian Mafia Romance Duet #2) is LIVE!!!!  The moment has finally arrived, and my book is on shelves everywhere on the I-net, waiting for you to download it and indulge!  This book was such a long time coming, and I’m so proud to see it completed and out there for the world to read.  It took a lot out of me, finishing this book, and that’s why I appreciate and love it so much!!

live

There isn’t anything that I can say about this book that I haven’t already said, so I’ll just post this here and hope that after months of promotion and trying to hype this up, you’ll believe me when I tell you that this book is the best thing I have ever written, and it will blow you away.  The rest is up to you.  This is an epic conclusion, and I hope you’ll take a chance on it for 99¢.

Now, on to the next part of this blog post–Here I/We Come!!

I’ve been doing this for three years now, and it has been an incredible journey, and I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish in this short time with the 8 books I have on the shelf.  However, it’s time for more.  I’m ambitious, and I want to be great.  It’s really as simple as that.  I want more and more people to read my books and fall in love with these stories that I fall in love with when I think of them.  I want the world to love my characters just as much as I do.  So, here I/We come.

My wife, bestselling author Isabel Lucero, and I, have been being pretty quiet about ourselves since we started this.  We’ve sat back and watched as other books and other authors have blown up and gone on to be big deals.  We’ve watched other male authors come and go and form clicks to join forces and fans, and we’ve been in the shadows, biding our time, waiting for it to be our turn.  Well, waiting for it to be our turn has only gotten us so far, and it’s obvious that it won’t take us to where we want to go.  So, we’re about to be everywhere.  We’re about to be in you faces nonstop!  I’m totally not kidding.  Before this post, I’ve already done 3 live stream videos where I have given away books to anybody who PM’s me, and I’ve got another book group takeover first thing tomorrow morning.  We’re going to plaster our mugs all over the internet so that people can get to know us and tell other people about us.  We are a married couple who writes books!  Both of us are bestselling authors!  We have what nobody else does, and we haven’t shown ourselves to the world.  Well this is it.  Those days are OVER.  So, I plan on being everywhere all the damn time.  It’s gonna be me and my baby, forming our own little click, and taking over the world.  We are the new Joker and Harley Quinn.  The world is ours, and we want you to know who we are.  So, if after all this time, you still feel like you don’t know who I am or who she is, and you’re not sure about buying our books for whatever reason, you’re about to get to know us.

I’m the Joker, she’s my Harley Quinn, and we’re about to take over the world.  Ready or not.  Here we come!!

Pushing Book 1 to Sell Book 2

Ladies & gentlemen, we are finally under a month away from the release of Long Live the King!!  I’m in full promo mode and I am sooooo excited for this book to hit your kindle!!  I went through so much to bring this story and these characters to the perfect conclusion, and in less than thirty days, you’ll finally get to see how it all ends.

However, there are new nerves that come with this release.  While I’m beyond excited about dropping this book, there’s something that has me worried.  LLTK is a book 2, and that is cause for concern.  Historically, book 2 never sells like book 1.  Naturally, some of the people who read book 1 don’t bother to read book 2 because they don’t like the first one.  Also, blogs who didn’t read book 1 aren’t jumping through the roof to promote book 2.  Lastly, people are skeptical about sequels, especially if the first one was good.  So, I know LLTK has a tough road ahead, but the people who read it will be blown away, and hopefully that gets them talking.  I wrote this book to knock people’s socks off, and I expect nothing less.

But, in order for me to hype the world up about book 2, I need to remind them about book 1 (or introduce them to), Kingpin (An Italian Mafia Romance).

13180926_1736689803241828_1586459477_n

If you haven’t met Dominic Collazo, now is the time to do it.  Kingpin is on sale for only 99¢, and will stay on sale until mid-September when LLTK and Kingpin both go to full price.  So, now’s the time to dive into this insane world of La Cosa Nostra and get to know Dominic, Alannah, and their second-chance romance.  These two meet as 11 year-olds and spend time together before being pulled apart by life, only to be brought back together in the middle of a street war.  Alannah has a lot to deal with and a lot to learn about the grown-up edition of Dominic Collazo, and it’s gonna take everything she’s got to stay afloat.

Before I wrote LLTK, Kingpin was my favorite of all my books.  Bringing Dominic to life in Kingpin was so fun and he quickly became my favorite character.  So if you haven’t read Kingpin, it’s about that time!  Go one-click Kingpin right this second, because it’s gonna cost you less than a dollar!  And if you already have read Kingpin, now’s the time to read it again and remind yourself of how insanely badass Dominic is, because he’s about to come back and take your world on a roller coaster ride.  He’s about to remind you all why book 1 was so big, and why you fell in love with him in the first place.  So Kingpin is here to serve as a reminder before Long Live the King explodes onto the scene.

Go one-click Kingpin now for only 99¢, and brace yourself, because the epic conclusion, Long Live the King, is coming September 5th.

Buckle up!

Until Next Week..

I did it – I Wrote My Version of the Perfect Book

Okay, we’re all grown here, so let me just be real with you for a minute.  I’m tired as fuck.  The readers will never know it, but I put myself through hell for Long Live the King (An Italian Mafia Romance Duet #2).  I have never worked so hard to complete a book in my career as an author.

Kingpin_ebook_REVEALFILE

I have a book on the shelf called Worth Saving (you should one-click it), and I made a ton of revisions for that book.  I added 7 or 8 chapters to that novel and it made it so much better.  It was a ton of work to get it done, but I wasn’t on a time crunch or anything, so I got to take my time and make it happen. I thought that was a lot of revisions, but that was before LLTK came knocking.

For Long Live the King, I finished the book and pushed it to (Lucky Number) seven beta readers, and while 3 of them loved the first version I sent them, 4 of them… well, not so much, and those 4 all disliked the same things.  I was crushed, frustrated, and heartbroken all at the same time.  I put in work for this sequel, and it wasn’t well-received.  My first thought was “What the hell?!?!”  Then I realized that if 4 different people came to the same conclusions, they must be on to something.  So after a long talk with my wife and a lot of thinking, my frustration turned into pure determination.  HOWEVER, my deadline was only a few days away, and I had to get to work.  So, I spent 5 days total doing nothing but revising, the last 3 of which were back-to-back-to-back and I never got in the bed before 1:30 am (and yes I had work every morning after).  I’m fucking exhausted, BUT IT WAS SO WORTH IT!!

Thanks to the honesty of my beta readers, I DID IT!!  I finally write my version of the perfect book.  Now, I’m not naive.  I know this book will get it’s share of reviews I’ll disagree with, just like all books do because that’s the way this thing works, but I believe this book is perfect.  TO ME, Long Live the King is perfect, and it never would’ve gotten to that point without my beta readers being real with me (sorry if I seemed on edge, betas. Criticism of your creation before it even comes out can be hard to take).

In the end, everything I ever wanted to happen in a book came to life.  My favorite character of all time, Dominic Collazo, is 100% on in this book.  There’s a lot of strong characters, but Dominic is the strongest and stands out in the crowd.  He demands respect, and I can’t wait until the world gets to reunite with him.

So, buckle up, world!!  Dominic Collazo is coming back with a bang in MY perfect book, Long Live the King.

ALL IT TAKES IS A MOB KING WHO’S WILLING TO DIE TO PROTECT HIS QUEEN…
Dominic would never let anything happen to Alannah, no matter how dangerous things become, or how guilty everyone around him looks. Even if everyone he ever trusted turns against him and he has to burn it all down to save her. He’ll let it burn, even if saving her means he’ll be consumed by the blaze.
